The parrot in his hand represents the unmistakable scene from the movie 'Flying Circus’.

Michael Palin, as the pet shop owner, protests that the Norwegian Blue ("beautiful plumage") is only "resting".

As subsequent claims and denials only increase the absurdity, it is finally revealed that this is indeed, an "ex-parrot"!
