| The Steiff series of nostalgia bears is designed to take you back to the golden age of Teddy bears - the era when Steiff's legendary classics were first produced. Henry, the first in the series (introduced last fall), was an instant success with his traditional good looks. Now comes Matthias, a completely different style Teddy bear, but one that is equally, if not more, appealing than his predecessor. Matthias is a "cone-nosed bear" - with a very pronounced tapering snout. While the origin of this particular style is not definitely known, some experts have speculated that, during the Teddy bear boom of the early 1900's, Steiff artisans, facing tight production deadlines, deviated from their assigned patterns and sewed these unique creations. Now quite rare, cone-nosed bears are extremely desirable to collectors. We developed Matthias to recapture the nostalgic appeal of this special style of bears. He has a lovely, golden blond coat with the tips of his mohair lightly bleached for a frosted effect - as if he had perhaps been sitting in the sun. Befitting an old-style bear, his head is loosely jointed and wobbly, adding to his charm.
